The Open-Top Eastern Bluebird House from Coveside Conservation Products is a very
unique wooden bird house. The roof of this bluebird house features a 4" diameter opening lined with 0.25" coated wire mesh that will allow rain and sunlight in but not predators or debris. Naturally, bluebirds will nest in rotten fence posts and stumps, so sun and rain do not deter them. On the other hand, sparrows are not as tolerant. After a family of bluebirds has established a nest inside, simply place the plastic cap over the hole to shelter them from the elements. A slanted roof and inside drainage holes help to keep the nest dry, while the wooden entrance guard blocks predators from entering the house. Other features include proper design and dimensions for bluebirds, ventilation that keeps the house from overheating and harming baby birds, and a rough interior that enables fledglings to climb out of the box. Cleaning is easy by lifting the latched side panel. Just use the attached hook to mount this bluebird bird house to a post and entice these beautiful and musical wild birds to your yard.
Eastern bluebirds are found east of the Rocky Mountains, throughout the eastern United States and Canada, and down to central Mexico. In some areas they are year-round residents, but in the northern areas bluebirds migrate to southerly latitudes for the winter. Eastern Bluebirds inhabit suburban and rural areas with sparse vegetation and scattered trees or other perches. They normally nest in fields, meadows, and orchards, avoiding both densely wooded and congested residential areas.
The breeding season begins anytime from mid-March to early April.
Bluebird bird houses should be mounted so that the entrance slot is approximately five feet above ground level. It is best to face the house away from prevailing winds and towards a tree or shrub within 100 feet of the house. The trees and shrubs provide a landing spot for the young bluebirds when they leave the house. Eastern Bluebird Houses should be spaced at least 100 to 150 yards apart.
